What Your Day Will Look Like:

As a Construction Inspector, you will monitor the contractor’s on‑site construction activities and ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, and contract documents. This includes oversight of excavations, drainage facilities, roadway surfaces, structures, and other civil construction elements. You will perform field measurements, document work progress, verify pay quantities, coordinate with contractor and agency personnel, and support project documentation for the final estimate package.

This role also includes materials testing responsibilities, performing both field and occasional laboratory tests on construction materials—such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates—to verify compliance with project specifications and industry standards. Your work supports construction quality control and contributes to the safe and successful execution of infrastructure projects.

What You'll Do:

Construction Inspection

  • Inspect, observe, document, and verify construction work in progress to ensure compliance with project schedules, plans, specifications, and contract requirements.
  • Apply engineering inspection principles to perform complex calculations and verify quantities of completed work.
  • Maintain accurate daily inspector reports, including contractor labor, equipment, materials received, and installed quantities.
  • Prepare as‑constructed sketches and assist in compiling documentation for project closeout and final estimates.

Materials Testing & Sampling

  • Conduct field and/or laboratory testing of construction materials including soil, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates to verify compliance with project specifications and relevant standards.
  • Collect, prepare, label, and document material samples from active construction sites, ensuring accuracy and proper chain of custody.
  • Perform standardized tests following ASTM, AASHTO, or other applicable procedures.
  • Document test results, prepare detailed reports, and communicate findings to engineers, project managers, and contractors.
  • Monitor field construction operations for potential material‑related issues and support quality assurance efforts.
  • Maintain and calibrate testing equipment, and follow all safety protocols associated with materials testing.

Coordination

  • Coordinate inspection phases and testing activities with contractor superintendents and agency personnel.
  • Support project teams by providing timely updates, raising issues, and assisting in problem resolution related to materials and construction operations.

What You'll Need:

Education

  • High school diploma required.
  • Associate degree or coursework in civil engineering, construction technology, or materials science preferred but not required.

Experience

  • Construction inspection experience preferred.
  • 1–2 years of experience in construction materials testing, geotechnical fieldwork, or related civil construction roles is beneficial.

Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, standards, and testing procedures.
  • Familiarity with ASTM and AASHTO testing standards.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to perform accurate mathematical measurements and field calculations.
  • Basic computer proficiency for documentation and reporting.
  • Effective communication skills for working with contractors, engineers, and project personnel.

Certifications

  • Ability to obtain required inspection and testing certifications within designated timeframes.
  • Entry‑level testing certifications (e.g., ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I, NICET Level I in Construction Materials Testing) are highly desirable.

Other Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, noise, hazardous atmospheres, or near water.
  • Physical ability to perform inspection and testing duties, including frequent walking, standing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 35 lbs.
  • Ability to sit or operate a company vehicle as needed.

This field job primarily operates in outdoor work environments that may include exposure to inclement weather, heat, humidity, noise, hazard, atmospheric conditions, and bodies of water, depending on project requirements.

While performing the duties of this job, physical demands of the employee may include frequent talking, hearing, standing, moving, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, grasping, feeling, balancing, coordination, and occasional sitting or operating a company vehicle.
